Jewelry For Men

Posted by Justin   9/13/07 at 8:01 am Thoughts          Comments (1)   | Trackback

I read an interesting post by Peter Crump on his blog, Find That Gift For Him, about whether or not a man should wear a wedding ring. You can check out the post here. He explains the history of men’s wedding rings, and makes some great points. Some of which I agree with, and of course, some of which I don’t. Don’t you just love the blog-o-sphere as a place to get differing opinions? Here is my take.

Crump explains that men wearing a wedding ring really only started during WWII as soldiers starting wearing them overseas as a symbol of their marital status. At the time, this was a voluntary act, and Crump argues that “despite the fact that the wearing of a mans wedding band is more common now, I think it is still true to say that it is considered optional.” Well I don’t know about you, but try going to my wife and asking her if my wedding ring is “optional” and I’m sure you’ll get a strong opinion. Which is interesting considering my ring almost never comes off unless I need to clean it, yet she usually removes hers the second she comes in the house.

Crump then goes on to say that for many men, it’s the first jewelry they may have ever owned so they are uncomfortable with it. Agreed, but hopefully it’s also the first wife he’s ever had (and last?) so everything has a break-in period.

He also points out that some men’s jobs or hobbies do not allow for the wearing of jewelry for safety or legal reasons. No argument there.

Peter’s main point of the post, is that the wearing, or not wearing, of a wedding ring should be entirely up the couple and shouldn’t be the subject of outside opinion. I couldn’t agree more.

My point here, and what I really want to add to this conversation, is that some kind of significant gift should be exchanged on the wedding day. So he’s not up for rings, so what, get him something else that works for the two of you. There are any number of pieces of jewelry that can be special. For example, when my grandmother was dying 15 years or so ago, she knew that my grandfather would end up married again. Obviously, she knew that he would then wear a new wedding ring. So she bought him a gold necklace that he wore as a symbol of her till the day he died. And yes, that necklace stayed on even during other relationships and marriages. The point is that another gift of significance can work, instead of a ring. Incidentally, I now own the original wedding ring that my wife had resized for me. It’s a really nice thing to have and I use it as an optional secondary wedding ring.

Optional secondary ring? Heck yeah. Variety is a good thing. A couple years ago, I was really giving my wife a hard time about never wearing many of the other rings I’ve given her over the years. She finally told me that she didn’t really want to wear multiple rings, being a school teacher and working with her hands all day, and she felt bad not wearing her actual wedding ring. So I told her that she was free to wear any ring she wanted, so long as she had something on her finger that I had given her. I’m not concerned about which ring she wears, so long as she wears one. Frankly, I’m much happier that the other pieces I’ve given her are getting some use now.

Since we’re on the subject of men’s jewelry, I’m so pleased to say that men’s jewelry has been coming on strong lately. Many different things have become fashionable again. So, I am going to officially announce that next week will be Men’s Jewelry Week at The Men’s Gift Guide. Each day, I’ll focus on a different kind of men’s jewelry and give you some of my top picks for each one. You may be surprised of some of the cool stuff out there for him right now. If you are going to make a jewelry purchase for the holidays, now would be the perfect time to get that done.

So thanks to Peter Crump, at Find That Gift For Him, for bringing up this topic. If you get a chance to check out his site, he’s got some great ideas on a variety of men’s topics.

A Quilt He’ll Actually Like

Posted by Justin   9/12/07 at 8:01 am Gift Ideas          Comments (0)   | Trackback

Yes, we know he continues to get enjoyment out of his “tappa kegga” t-shirt. We all know which events he “survived” and which keggers he conquered. Seems like he got a t-shirt for EVERYTHING in college, doesn’t it? And of course, we men can not bear to part with anything like that (see Men’s Gift Rule #3). But, you are sick of seeing him wear them. It’s a husband and wife struggle that’s been going on for eons. So, turn them into something useful.

I’m sure you’ve seen this idea before, but those ratty old t-shirts can be turned into a custom quilt. Trouble is do you really have the time or know-how to do it? My guess is no. So contact the Campus Quilt Company and let them do the work for you. Simply pick a size, ship off up to 49 of his t-shirts, and in as little as 2-4 weeks, you’ll have a custom quilt that always reminds him of his wild youth. Throw it over his favorite chair and let him reminisce anytime he wants.

Sports Team Watch with Bling

Rarely do I suggest super expensive things, but in interest of my post last week about football team gifts, I thought I’d at least mention that these are available.

If you’ve got plenty of money to spend, and he is an absolute freak about his sports team, he may like one of these luxury team watches.

All teams are available. You can choose from the full diamond bezel watch (shown), or go with the “economy” version that has the interior diamonds, but with a regular bezel.

You can get these watches for your favorite football, hockey, baseball, basketball, nascar driver, or college.

Clear Up The Mess Under His Desk

Posted by Justin   9/10/07 at 8:59 am Gift Ideas          Comments (1)   | Trackback

You know, all the wires under my desk drive me nuts. Always tangled up; never able to figure out which one I’m looking for; always seem to run out of room no matter how many power strips there are. Well I thought this Liberator Combo Pack was great to get started cleaning things up. If you hadn’t hear of Liberator Cords yet, they are short extension cords that let you plug in those huge power adapters (that otherwise cover up other outlets) into a power strip easily. You get two each of the classic liberator, the flat plug liberator (freeing up those outlets stuck behind furniture), and the Liberator Plus, that adds an additional outlet. All this help for just $10.99?? Check it out!

Yay, Football

I’m literally sitting here watching the first game of the season. Feels like it’s been forever. I’m sure I’ll get some objection from the baseball and soccer guys, but football is simply the best sport there is. It’s the only sport that I can actually sit and watch an entire game without getting bored. In my unofficial research, I find that a whole lotta guys agree with me.

If your guy is one that is on my side, always remember that a gift with his favorite team logo on it is always a big hit. My favorite is this Gametime General Manager’s Series Watch. I wear mine (yes, Redskins) about every day. All teams available check them out.

While you are thinking about it, now is a great time to go ahead and get him a great football gift. The Round Table has team gifts for every team out there. Simply click his favorite team below and check out the great merchandise.

Make Your Tools Magnetic!

Posted by Justin   9/5/07 at 6:57 pm Gift Ideas          Comments (0)   | Trackback

Talk about a super cheap, helpful little tool. You know how when you’re working with a screwdriver and some of the newer ones have a magnetic tip so that it’ll hold onto the screw and you hopefully won’t loose it? Well I wish every one of my screwdrivers was like that, but they’re not. But this little guy can help. Only 3 ounces, this Magnetizer/Demagnetizer allows you to stick the end of any steel tool inside and give it an instant charge. Pretty handy for using the tools you’ve already got and not having to replace them with the new thing.

Grill Lighter

Posted by Justin   9/4/07 at 8:54 am Gift Ideas          Comments (0)   | Trackback

You know my gas grill has been broken forever. I’ve had it for 6 years. The extreme heat, then cold winters do damage to those little contacts and it will no longer light on its own. It was battery powered too, pretty nice.

So now I use one of those long lighters. I flip on the gas and bend down real close to light the flame. Come to think of it, probably not the safest thing in the world to be doing. I still have my eyebrows though.

Here is a safer gas-less alternative that also just happens to be a cool little gadget. The Long-Reach Safety Igniter keeps you hands, and you head, far away from the flash points. A simple press of the button and a spark lights the flame. Perfect.
